Arctic - „It’s not the Heat, it’s the Uncertainty“

Spatial semantics in climate change - geopolitics in the Arctic

Dipl.-Geogr. Sylvie Rham

The circumpolar North under the impression of climate change is an arena where uncertainty unfolds to its fullest. This uncertainty affects manifold dimensions: social, political, jurisdictional, economical, ecological. This multidimensional uncertainty becomes relevant only in future aspirations in a sense that present action is conditioned by an expectancy of a subject's future. By anticipating any of the possible scenarios for an 'Arctic yet-to-come', a specific relation to the future is employed and made present.
